Newberry Sub Shop

Before a trip through Pennsylvania, a friend asked me to stop in Williamsport to pick up some subs. Not one or two subs, mind you, but over a half dozen. He wanted to share them with friends. I honored his request and soon learned that Newberry Sub Shop has earned such devotion.

Newberry Sub Shop is located in Williamsport’s Newberry neighborhood, right on Newberry street. The neighborhood is west of Lycoming Creek and can be reached by taking exit 136 off of Route 15. Of note is that the neighborhood is just down the road from the Original Little League baseball stadium. I have no idea how long the sub shop has been there, but it has been a favorite of my friend for decades.

The menu

Even though it is a sub shop, the menu has a variety of other items. These include salads, pizza, burgers, and wraps. Many of the salads are deli inspired, featuring items such as salami, ham, and/or turkey. There is also a Cheesesteak salad! The sub section has both cold and hot subs and something called a Cosmo. I have not heard of Cosmos before, but the the menu indicates they are subs toasted in the oven. The subs also feature deli meats. Other sub options include meatball subs, Cheesesteaks, and something called a grinder. That seems to a local specialty that I assume is a hot sub of some variety.

The Cheesesteaks

My friend asked me to pick up Cheesesteak subs and I have not ventured beyond that. The Cheesesteaks by default include White American cheese, fried or raw onions, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, and hot peppers. These subs are enormous. Even a half (pictured) is big enough to split across two meals. The dominating ingredient is the beef. The sandwich is chuck full of it. But the other ingredients are not skimped on either. And the bun is thick and sturdy. Everything tasted fresh, making for a fabulous meal.

Service and Sides

I do want to point out that Newberry Sub Shop is not fast food. Every sandwich is freshly made to order. When I arrived there was 4 other people sitting down waiting for their orders. I placed mine, sat down, and ended up waited about 20 minutes. I was pretty hungry when I arrived, so I bought a bag of potato chips to tide me over. The chips are a local Pennsylvania brand named Middleswarth Potato Chips, which I have written about before. I like the brand, and this was the first I’ve had the Japapeno flavor. It was not spicy, but was well seasoned. It hit the spot.

Peanut butter brownie

There is also a small selection of baked goods on the counter where you place your orders. I could not resist and ordered a peanut butter brownie. I enjoyed the brownie, but wished there was more peanut butter. Still, it was good enough to make me want to try their other baked items.

Final Thoughts

With high quality Cheesesteaks, Newberry Sub Shop is a great place to stop and get a bit to eat. As the food is made fresh, it can take awhile before you get your food. But the wait is absolutely worth it.

  1. Here in New Mexico, any food with “jalapeno” in it’s name is usually very spicy. πŸ₯΅ The locals here would be disappointed if these chips didn’t burn your tongue. I myself prefer mild.
