Doshier’s Donuts

On a road trip in Virginia while looking for a place to eat breakfast, I passed a road side sign advertising sandwiches and donuts. I turned around as soon as I could and found the place, the store front of Doshier’s Donuts. Much to my delight, everything there is made fresh. Even the donuts, which are fried to order!

Doshier’s Donuts was started by husband and wife team of Shawn and Kelly Doshier in early 2020. The business began as a delivery service, serving central Virginia in the Louisa/Palmyra area, a half hour north of of Charlottesville. After 2 ½ years, they started operating a food truck. In May 2023, they opened the shop I saw, which is in Louisa Virginia.

Menu: Breakfast Sandwiches, Specialties, Build Your Own [sandwich], Drinks

While donuts are their centerpiece offering, Doshier’s also has a variety of sandwiches. As I was searching for breakfast, I was interested in one. Breakfast sandwiches consists of egg and cheese, served without meat or with sausage, bacon, or ham. The cheese choices are American, Swiss, provolone, or cheddar. There is also a choice of bread: white, wheat, or rye. (The menu also lists sour dough, but I was not offered that.) Outside of the breakfast menu is a variety of deli sandwiches. Additionally, specialty sandwiches are: BLT, Club, Grilled Cheese, Reuben, and Philly Cheesesteak.

Sausage, Egg, and Cheese on Rye

I asked the person at the counter, who I later found out was co-owner Kelly, what her favorite sandwich was. She said the Sausage Egg and Cheese. I ordered that, choosing cheddar cheese and the rye bread. I was very impressed with both the size of the sandwich and the freshness of the ingredients. The egg was cooked over easy. I prefer a runnier egg, but over easy works well in a grilled sandwich. The sandwich was filled with melted cheese, but the star of the dish was the bread. It was very fresh and very tasty! Altogether delicious!

Chocolate Glazed donut

I could not go to a donut shop without buying a donut and asked about the options. A small sign gave the day’s choices: Glazed, Cinnamon Sugar, Chocolate, Glazed, or Powdered Sugar. I chose the chocolate glazed. The donuts are plain yeast donuts fried and covered with your choice of topping. Fried to order, they came out piping hot. The chocolate glaze was still molten! And these donuts are delicous. They have a slightly dense texture, and are not greasy in the slightest at all. They have a mild taste; not too sweet. The chocolate glaze had good flavor. Overall, it is a nice breakfast treat.

Doshier’s Donuts is a small place, but there is both space inside and outside for eating. Both have a handful of tables. The inside also has a small eating counter by the window. On the day I was there, it was a little chilly inside the building. Nevertheless, Doshier’s exuded a warm and friendly atmosphere. Kelly was friendly and helpful and Shawn was friendly as well, going out of his way to ask if I had a good experience. (I replied affirmatively.) I am glad I decided to turn around and have breakfast at Doshier’s.
