Pop’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Company

I have been meaning to try Pop’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Company, located in Alexandria Virginia, for a couple of years now. But every time I was in town it always had long lines and I went elsewhere. On an unusually warm President’s Day, I decided to endure the wait and try their ice cream. It was worth it.

Pop’s is indeed an old fashioned ice cream store. The vintage signs and checkerboard floor makes you feel like you have stepped back in time. Pop’s Ice Cream Company is located in the heart of old town Alexandria, on the main road King Street, one block up from the Potomac River.

The place is named after “Pop” Giovanni, whose recipes for ice cream were so famous that he catered the White House in the 1940s. The shop on King Street has become very popular. I don’t know how long it has been there; the earliest review I found was from 2010 so it’s been around for over a decade.

Pop’s has over 2 dozen flavors — from old standbys Chocolate, Vanilla, and Strawberry — to more exotic flavors: Carrot Cake, Choco Banana, and Cleveland Brownie. They also have Italian Ice, floats, and specialty sundaes such as The Campfire (Graham Crackers and Marshmallow with Hot Fudge sauce) or Johnny Appleseed (chunks of Apple Pie with Butterscotch and Caramel).

But I was there on President’s Day. So I had to get the Black Cherry ice cream. The chocoholic in me also wanted something with chocolate, so I got a second scoop of Ruby’s World Famous Chocolate Sprinkle.

Was it worth the wait? And did it live up to the hype? Without a doubt! The Black Cherry was filled with chunks of cherries and overall had a good cherry flavor. However, what blew me away was Ruby’s Chocolate. As I had never heard of it, I didn’t think it is really world famous. It should be. There is a deep, rich chocolate flavor and the ice cream is incredibly smooth. And, as the name suggests, it really does have chocolate sprinkles mixed in. Absolutely fabulous!

I was very happy with the service as well. Despite the long line which out the door, the wait was fairly short. The line move quickly and I got my ice cream in about 20 minutes. There is even a long bench next to the line inside the store so kids (or adults) can sit down while waiting.

For terrific ice cream in a nostalgic setting, Pop’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Company is the place to go.
